Toward

The point at Toward was divided into 3 farms by 1538-9. Toward Easter or Toward Fleming or Toward Altdaroch or Towart M’Gorrie was 3m; Little Toward or Toward Houstoun or Toward Glaik was 3m and the remainder of Toward was also 3m. Appears as Towart & Towart Point in Blaeu’s map of Bute. Pont(14) marks Altderrach. In 1751 the valuations were Towardinuill (3m), Kewnstown (3m), Castletown (3m) and Carstown (3m).

Auchavoulin

Before 1535 this was church property belonging to the chaplainry of the Holy Trinity, ‘Castelwell’ (RMS III (1533)). The Achavoulin estate is consistently described as £5 (7½m) and apparently consisted of Meikle & Little Achavoulin (6m), Corlarach, Backane and Glenfyne(1½m). Auchavoulin was renamed Toward after 1817. Old Auchavoulin House is now by Castle Toward (Argyll VII No’s 154 & 158). Appears as Achoullyn in Blaeu’s map of Bute.

Ardenslate

Historical Manuscripts Commission 4th Report p 478 No 76 refers to 1d Ardinslatt etc in 1404. Cf RMS I App 2, Index A, No 1822.

Glen Tarsan

According to the Minutes of the Synod of Argyll (Vol I p 50) Glen Tarsan was to be transferred from Inverchaolain to Kilmun in 1642. In the 1751 Valuation Roll it still appears under Inverchaolain so I have not included it in the totals above.

The same minute makes clear that Inshnarousk, Curre, Berniss, Stuk, Auchunaclach, Stronlonaig, Glenmessan and Garchra were all then in Dunoon parish.

Ardnablaich

The situation with the two Ardnablaichs is confusing. There was an Ardnablaich on the East shore of Loch Eck and another a few miles away on the West shore of Loch Long. The former seems to have been 1½m in 1638 (AS II (618)), the latter 1¼m in 1620 (AS II (97)).

Inverchapel (Glen Finart)

RMS II (2385) 1497 refers to

terras de Inverquhapill in Glasinfurd … et dimedietate unius mercate terre (vocat. Pordewry) in territorio de Inverquhapil occupate per quendam procuratorem, cum baculo Sancte Munde, Scotice vocato Deowray

(lands of Inverchapel in Glasinfurd [Glen Finart] … and half a markland (called Pordewry) within Inverchapel occupied by a certain procurator [church official] with [who keeps] the staff of St Mund, called in the vernacular Deowray [Dewar]).

‘Strathache’ (Strath Eachaig) is defined as 100m (Old Extent) in Argyll Retours(101) of 1503. The 2d ‘Strachachie’ is referred to in Historical Manuscripts Commission IV p 478 No 79 of 1407. Unfortunately neither of these can be pinned down to properties on the ground. Highland Papers II pp 121-2 of 1240 mentions ½d Letherlochhake and ½d Strohon. The former just means ‘Leth-tir’ or the slopes of Loch Eck so it is difficult to know which particular farm is being referred to. The latter is probably the Strone at NS 1980 where the Holy Loch meets Loch Long.
