Mulindry

Mulindry is consistently a 1/4 land (33s 4d) from 1541-1686. From about 1710 it seems to have inceased in value to 41s 8d (40s in the Islay shorthand of the day). This was due to the accession of Leatur which was worth 1/16 or 8s 4d. I have no reference to Leatar before 1686 when it is linked with Grobolls as 1/16 land. Leatur/Leatar may have previously been part of another farm or it may be a former church farm such as Carro which is otherwise unaccounted for. Caldwell (p 325) has suggested the second element of Mulindry may be from treabh. If so, this may be of great significance since the Senchus refers to Islay having 100 ‘treb’. (See Bannerman p 56).

Gortanilivorrie

With Olnach(=Dulloch?) and ‘Stealreoch’ in 1686. With Dulloch (and probably Skelereioch) in 1722. The valuation from 1722-1741 (and probably 1686) was 25s or 3/16. I suspect each of the three components was worth 8s 4d. (In 1878 Gortanilivorrie is marked Gortanloist). = Gorthe of 1541?

Daill, Cill Bhraenan and Ochtonaffrathe

These 3 farms are listed together as 5m in 1507 and 1509. They appear with Surn in 1686, 1722, and probably 1733 & 1741, usually as 7½m. Daill was usually ¼ land whilst Cill Bhraenan and Ochtonaffrathe were each 1/8 land. Surn was usually 1⅞m so there is ⅝m wanting which may be part (or all) of Gorth which appears with Daill as 3¾m in 1541 & 1614. (To complicate the issue Dall appears twice in RMS VII (1137) of 1614. The first entry is with Gorthe for 3¾m as in 1541. This would imply Gorthe was 1¼m. However Dall also appears by itself as 3m 1s 4d amongst the ‘extra’ farms entered in the 1614 list. Since this is probably meant to be 3m 1s 8d (3⅛m) the implication here is that Gorthe, if included, was only ⅝m). In 1541 Gorthe may have included Skelereioch which does not appear independently until 1614. The most likely candidate for Gorthe is what is now Gortanilivorrie.

RSS I (1420) of 1506-7 refers to the lands of ‘Ouchnafrech Kilbrannane & Indale’. The last is more probably Daill than Loch Indaal.

Where was Ochtonaffrathe? The only local place-names which look even vaguely relevant are Cnoc na Moine-Brathaidh (NR 378627) and Sruthan na Moine Bradaich.

Carro

These lands are ex-Iona but are not listed independently in 1507. Almost all of the lands that are listed as church property in 1507 can be traced in the 1617 charter. This is one that cannot. There is a Monechorrie at NR 3664.

Allalladh

The similarity of names suggests Ellay – which was an Iona property. However, according to AS II (194) of 1625, Ella was in Kilmeny parish whereas Allalladh was in Kilarrow. (In Smith’s map of 1848 Alelay is given as a pendicle of Nosebridge). I have no valuation for Allalladh and do not think it was the same as Ellay.

Eorrabus

Ourebulsche is valued at 5m with Eskillis in 1499, 1507, 1509 & 1528-9. By itself Eorrabus seems to have been worth 2½m(1541, 1562-4, 1583-4 & 1614). It is given as 3/8 from 1722-1751 by which time it may have contained another farm.

Keirreishlaraich

Caldwell states that this was feued to Mr William Campbell of Eorrabus in 1628. He gives Kerreish Laich (1631) and Kerowbhyachie (1654) as other forms. In other parts of the West Highlands and Hebrides a first element Kerr- or similar would imply a quarter but I don’t think a quarterland is meant here. It is more likely to be for ‘kerrowrane’ which was half a leorheis and so 1/32nd land or 4s 2d.

Octovullin

The prefix Ocht- suggests an eighthland whereas Auch- just suggests ‘field’. Most spellings indicate the former. Drummall was linked with Octovullin in 1507 when each was worth 1/8. By 1686 the extent of Ochtomullin & Drumall was 3/8 – made up of two distinct units of 1/4 and 1/8. This leaves 1/8 unaccounted for although half (8s 4d) of this accrued to Octovullin between 1507 and 1541 when it is given as 1⅞m.

Ballinos

With Lag in 1507 & 1509 but I have no separate valuations for either of them. I cannot assume they were 1/8 land each since Ballinos seems to have been more important. By itself as 1/4 land in 1562-4 & 1583-4. With Gortenteid in 1722, With Rim & Gortented in 1733, 1741 & 1751. With Gortentyd, Dowdillbeg and the cowland of Keanrasary in 1686.
