Blaeu marks Ransa (Ramsa? = ram’s island?) just W of the N end of Seil. It appears as Eilean nan Caorach (Sheep Island) in OS(1871). Was this the same as Inchbane (Innis ban = white island) of 1622 and 1664 – and so part of Ardincaple? | ||

Shuna
After describing Lismore, Skene’s source refers to two islands called ‘Hwnayis’ (Celtic Scotland, Vol III, Appendix III p 436). I think these are the two islands called Shuna – one here and one by Appin. This Shuna is described as belonging to a kinsman of McCoule (MacDougall) of Lorn and ‘is 8 merk land’.
Torsa
RRS V (27) 1313 is a grant of various lands in Kilbrandon and Kilninver parishes. This includes ‘Toresay’ which is likely to be Torsa. See also RMS I App 2 Index A No 363 & Index B No 10.
Kilbride, Seil
OPS II, II p 825 (quoting RSS Vol LXII f 15 of 1591) gives the boundaries of Kilbride-beg in great detail. References to the cemetery and church are perhaps to Kilbride rather than Kilbrandon. There are now no visible remains of this church. The cemetery was ploughed up before 1852 (OPS II, II p 826).
Kilchoan
AS II (316) of 1630 refers to 6m Kilchoan consisting of 1d Barchalleg, 1d Garrowrone, 1d Glenchallach plus Illanculter. In AS I (276) of 1644 these read 1d Barchalley, 1d Garrowron, 1d Glenchalloch plus half Illanculter. In AS II (1469) of 1669 they read 1d Barshellag, 1d Garrowron and 1d Glenshellach plus Ilanculter. (Ilanculter is Eilean Coltair in NM 8012). On this basis we should be inclined to think 1d=2m. I cannot identify any of the three components of Kilchoan so presume these place-names have been lost.
Degnish
Degnish is sometimes described as 22m which seems to have included 12m Degnish proper plus 6m Kilchoan and 4m Cadiltoun. We have several references to the 12m Degnish(1596-7, 1618, 1620, 1621, 1637, 1685) but only as 8m in 1751 and 1796. It looks as if 4m has been lost from the Degnish valuation which was not taken up within the valuations of Kilchoan or Caddleton. See also RMS I App 2 Index A No 363.
Achichicheych
Below the Kilninver table I have discussed a 1338 charter which deals with 6 farms in Lorn. Four of these are in Kilninver but 1d ‘Hachychnacelache’ and ½d ‘Cragnamoychenache’ may be in Kilbrandon. I do not know where the latter is and ‘Hachychnacelache’ is difficult to locate precisely. There was an Achnanclach in Seil at NM 782186 but I doubt this is the one referred to here. There was also a property – part of Ardmaddy in 1571 – called variously:
Auchichiheych, 2m, 1470
Achichicheych, 2m, 1470
Achitichine, 2m, 1470
Auchtyhyt, 1m, 1540-1
Awchtyheych, 1d, 1541
Auchdaheycht, 2m, 1571
Auchtigtyheich, 1d, 1630
This may or may not be the same as Auchinaclosh (RRS V No. 27, 1313) or Auchinacloch (OPS II, I, 106) which is listed by Auchnasaul (NM 7919). A ‘Crech a cloich’ is marked SE of Ardshellach (NM 7818) in RHP 720 and there is also a Barrnacoilich at NM 7916. It is difficult to be sure which of these various names match to which farms on the ground.
