Cruinache

In GD 112/2/56/2/5 of 1649 there is reference to an £8 estate in Lorne which consisted of Crundachye, Glenno & Kandlocheateiff (Kinlochetive). In AS I (319) of 1650 this £8 (12m) estate is further detailed as including Crundachie (4m?), Gleno (4m?) & Barhallachan (1m?), Barnadeis (1m?), Innergnissagan (1m?) and Kendlochetive (1m?). (The values in brackets are derived from other documents).

‘Barmdryn’

In GD 112/2/107 of 1470 this property is listed between Crounachie and Gleno. In GD 112/3/5 of 1470 it appears as ‘Barindorn’ but in the same position in the list. I suspect it was later absorbed into the 4m Cruinache. One place-name which may be relevant is Barran Dubh at NN 0433.

Glennoe

Glennoe seems to have totalled 4m but in 1470 the two parts are called ‘Furtove & Duvcove’ (GD 112/2/107) or ‘Fincove Dulcove’ (GD 112/3/5). In 1524 there is reference to 2m ‘Dowhawe & Glenroy’ in Lorne – which may refer to the same farms. Linked with Glennoe (sometimes) is Barsallachan which seems to have been worth 1m. Linked with Barsalchan in 1470 was Barnadeass which by implication was also worth 1m. (In RRS V (393) of ?1321-2 there is reference to the 3d Blairhalchan & Blarenanerchennach. The context is Kilmore & Kilbride but the first name is reminiscent of Barsalchan. There is also a Barr nan Eireannach just south of Dalmally).

Glenkinglas

Glenkinglas is listed as 12m in 1506-7 but 13m thereafter. Following AS II (42, 43 & 45) of 1619 it seems to have consisted of the following farms: Inverlevir (2m), Beache (2m), Poytoche (2m – but in two separate sections of 1m each), Narrachan (2m with the mill), Derrinasere (1m), Ardmadere (2m) and Inverkinglass (2m).

Glencarne

1d Glencarne appears in 1540-1, 1630 & 1649. In AS I (311) of 1649 it is referred to as the 1d Glencarna, commonly called the 2m land of Innerclane (Inver-Fhaolain) & Innercharnane (Invercharnan) in Lorne. These properties are also paired as 2m in 1650, 1657 & 1686.

Invercharnan

Invercharnan is paired with Lettermolchallum as 2m in 1470. Lettermolchallum means ‘the slope of (Beinn) Maol Chaluim’ (NN 1352). Since this hill lies between Glen Charnan and Glen Fhaolain and since the latter is not mentioned in 1470 it may be that the name Glen Fhaolain came to replace that of Lettermolchallum. By 1669 Inver-Fhaolain included the pendicle of Lettirmechallune.

Penemore

Penemore is listed as 2m of forest in GD 112/2/107 & GD 112/3/5 (where it is Penymore). I do not think this is the Pennymore in Glenaray parish since the 5m of that still belonged to Argyll in 1630. In the 1470 list it is either at the very end of the properties on the west side of Glen (or Loch) Etive or at the beginning of the Appin lands. I think the former is more likely. It disappears after 1470 but may have been part of Druimachoish.

Cadderlie

There were three separate Cadderlies coming to a total of 5m. Over Cadderlie was consistently 2m from 1564 and is probably the 2m Dalcadderly of the 1751 Argyll Valuation Roll. (This is now Dail at NN 0539). Cadderliemore was also 2m from 1470 although OPS II, I, p 155 gives a reference to 1m in 1479. However page 155 also gives a reference to 1d Cadderlymore in 1541 – which would be equivalent to 2m. Most of the references are consistent at 1d or 2m but AS II (950) of 1657 gives it as 4m. Finally there is Cadderliebeg which is consistently 1m except in one document (GD 112/2/110/1 of 1564 where it is 2m). Cadderliebeg was also known as ‘Cadderlie na manach’ or ‘Cadderlie of the monks’ (ie Ardchattan Priory). I do not know why this particular Cadderlie should have been so christened since the other two Cadderlies also appear in lists of Ardchattan possessions.

Craig (Duirinnis)

This is virtually always associated with Eilean Duirinnis. I suspect the reason that this island and Eilean nam Meann are always mentioned is because Eilean Duirinnis was a ferry crossing. Otherwise they both appear relatively worthless.

Cragmory

There is a Burial Ground at Creag Mhor near Dalvuie farm and it may be that this latter name has replaced Cragmory.

Ardmucknish

I doubt this is a name ending in -ness. Early spellings include Ardmwkrys(1558), Ardmochroiss(1641), Ardmochrow(1648), Ardmochrois(1667).

‘Terriwin’

This property is connected with ‘Clachvrak’ in 1470, 1626 & 1664. Both properties are difficult to locate but are likely to be on the south side of Glen Creran. The first element of ‘Terriwin’ may be ‘Tir’ or ‘land’ and the only relevant place-name is Taraphocain (NN 0146) but I am not sure this is it. The spellings are unhelpful (‘Terriwin’ and ‘Terrmin’ in 1470, ‘Trunine’ in 1626 and ‘Kininie’ in 1664). ‘Clachvrak’ or ‘Clachbrak’ in 1470 is ‘Clachbrek’ in 1626 and ‘Clachbreck’ in 1664. This may be the same as the ‘Clachtbreck’ connected to Achacha in GD 112/2/1/1 of 1530.
