Under Map Sources I have only marked those properties which appear as farms in RHP 3305. This nineteenth-century map shows the property of Sir James Milles Riddell and is important for delineating farm boundaries. For instance the three Swordles are long thin strips called (from W to E) Chorrach, More and Huel.

The border between Ardnamurchan and Sunart was flexible. In the fourteenth century Lettirlochshiel went with Sunart. From c 1541 to c 1651 it was with Ardnamurchan and worth 20s(=1½m). From c 1723 it reverted to Sunart and had a value of 3d(=1½m). The reverse seems to have happened with Tarbert, Camustorsa and Camusinas. From 1541 to c 1667 they were with Sunart and worth 1m 10s(=1¾m or 3½d). From 1723 all three seem to have been grouped under Tarbert which was worth 3d and now in Ardnamurchan. Presumably there had been some sort of exchange.

Corryvullin

Corryvulin is of interest because of the connection with Alasdair Macdonald the eighteenth-century Gaelic poet. Alasdair makes it clear that Allt an t-Siucair runs through Corryvullin. I think that the former Corryvullin was to the east of the burn at Camas Choire Mhuilinn at c. NM 521630. This is about a kilometre east of the burn now called Allt Choire Mhuilinn. R Black quotes Alasdair’s plea for 2d of Killmorry in ‘MacMhaighstir Alasdair – The Ardnamurchan Years’ p 20.

‘Pynquhonych’

I have not been able to locate ‘Pynquhonych’ but on the basis of its position in the 1541 list it lay between Glendrian and Fascadale. The first element of the name is from ‘peighinn’ (penny).

‘Suerdillbeg’

The name ‘Suerdillbeg’ seems to have changed after 1651. It is (S)auridillchiel(1696), Swardilcheul(1723), Swordilchiel(1751), Suaradillcheill(1765) and Swordle Huel in RHP 3305.

Peindow

This name is a combination of ‘peighinn’ (penny) and ‘dubh’ (black) meaning the black pennyland. One source is NAS CS 46/1913/May No 6 pp 346-8 of 1696 where it is 4d ‘terrarum vulgo nominatarum Pendower blackpenny’ (which I think should read 4d ‘commonly called Pendow or black penny(land)’). The other is GD 112/2/93/4 of 1765 which says ‘The 4d of Commonly called Peindow or Clerk’s penny’ (where I think “Clerk’s” should read ‘black’). In both documents it is listed after Ockle (NM 5570) and before two places which look to be Creag Dhubh (NM 6367?) and Gorteneorn (NM 6367) although the latter might possibly be Gortenfern instead (NM 6068).

Corrynnenach

On the basis of the 1541 list Corrynnenach (1m=2d) was probably a small sheiling somewhere SE of Swordle and Ockle. In 1751 a Corrienach is linked to Camus nan Geall as a 6d unit (probably 5d Camus nan Geall, 1d Corrienach). It seems likely that this sheiling was somewhere in the middle of the peninsula between these three farms. A possible site is Na Coireachan at NM 5467.

Crag, Daal & Gorteneorn?

In NAS CS 46/1913/May No 6 pp 346-8 of 1696 there is reference to the 6d Craigdowel G(?). Daal and Gortonoorn are 6d together in 1723. In GD 112/2/93/4 of 1765 we learn of 6d Gorten Sorne and Craigdo(n)e. I think all the references are to the three farms of Creag Dubh, Daal & Gorteneorn. I am not certain of the individual valuations.

Ardtoe

Ardtoe is 4d with the island of ‘Kisca’ in 1696. I think this is unlikely to be Risga (NM 6060/6160) just south of  Glenborrodale. It is perhaps the former name of one of the small islands off Ardtoe, either within Kintra Bay or outside.

Church Lands

In 1541 (ER XVII pp 624, 645) the following are said to be church lands:

1m Ormsaigbeg belongs to Iona (‘ane mark land of the saidis landis of Ormissagbeg fest to Ycomkle’)

1m Ormsaigbeg belongs to St Peter’s Chapel (‘ane hale mark land therof to Sant Peteris Chapell’). ‘Hale’ (whole) is spelled ‘haill’ on p 645. Although it needs to be 1m in order for Ardnamurchan to be 80m in total I do wonder if this is a mistake for ‘half’ a merk.

½m Branalt belongs to ‘Our Lady’

1½m Glenborrodale belong to Oronsay

2½m Grigadale belong to Iona
