Acharan and Achara

There are two farms in Duror, now Acharan and Achara, whose values are the same and whose names are so similar, that they can be easily confused. However in all the early documents the former ends with ‘n’ or ‘ne’ whilst the latter ends with an ‘r’ or ‘re’. Achara is the site of a large standing stone (Argyll II (110)).

Coultie and Bealach

The farms of Coultie (1m) and Bealach (2m) were originally held by Ardchattan Priory. ‘Ballach’ appears by itself in GD112/2/107 & GD112/3/5 of 1470 but I do not think this is the Bealach in Duror. The two farms appear together in GD112/2/110/1 1564 and then in RMS V (691) & RMS VI (1436) which refer to 1564, in AS II (1) 1617 and GD 112/2/93/1 of 1728. They are linked to Creagan (2m in Appin) – another Ardchattan property – in AS II (1371) 1667.
