Mamore

The total value of Mamore was either 40m or 50m.

Mammor was 40m in ER XI p 460 of c. 1501.

RSS I (844) 1502 talks of the lands of Mawmore ‘extending in the hale to fifty merkis worth of land’.

RMS II (2743) 1503 describes Mammore ‘extendentes ad 50m’ old extent.

The Rental of the Lordship of Huntly in Miscellany of the Spalding Club IV pp 292-3 & 295 states three times that Mamore was 40m but adds the following memorandum ‘Thair is fywe mark land moir nor the fourtie mark land in Mamoir’.

I cannot resolve these contradictions but since the farms listed in the table above total 38m 3s I am inclined to settle on a figure of 40m. (Although I may be short about 3¾m round Callart – see below). Glen Nevis was a separate 10m but it is possible it was sometimes included in Mamore’s total.

The 20 merklands of Mamore that became part of the Lochiel estate are listed in OPS II, I, 172 quoting Argyle Charters of 1522, E768/1 of 1748-9, Pringle’s report of 1761 and E786/50 of 1774.

The farms retained by the Duke of Gordon are listed in AS II (994) of 1660, RHP 861(Farms 37-45), RHP 35981 & Morison’s report of 1772.

Blarmachfoldach

The high pennyland valuation is perhaps explained by the description in Map 5 of RHP 2494 which states ‘It is the largest possession of Corn Land belonging to the Duke of Gordon in Lochaber’. In GD 44/51/743/1 of 1642 its extent is given as 4½m which is what it paid in 1600 (Miscellany of the Spalding Club IV pp 292-3).

Callert/Callart

In GD 44/51/743/1 (Rental of Lochaber 1642) Callart is 7½m with Camisunherrie and (C)ailit(?). A dearth of data makes it difficult to be sure of the individual valuations.
