Cullicudden Schoolmaster

Cullicudden Schoolmaster

Macgill p 61 No 144 1671 is a record of how the parish worthies decided to maintain a schoolmaster. On the basis that every davach should pay a boll victual the following figures are given:

Farm Modern name Bolls/Firlots Davachs Other evidence
mikle & litle Breyes Brae 1b 1 1 davach
Cullicudden Cullicudden 10f (=2½b) 1½ davachs

Risolas Resolis 1f (=¼b) ¼
Bellcherrie Ballicherry 2f (=½b) ½
Total   12 bolls***

+3 from patron

13 implied davachs 9 davachs total

The ‘Davachs’ column is implied by the number of bolls and firlots raised.

The ‘Other evidence’ column shows davach assessments found in other documents. These match very well.

* Rostabightie – PNRC p 123. Blaeu marks near Braelangwell.

** The only other reference I have found to this davach is in GD305/1/43/4 c. 1678 which includes it in the barony of Cromartie.

*** The actual total is 13 bolls – not 12 as given in the source.

I have not incorporated every bit of the above data into the Kirkmichael table because there are some slight differences.
