De Insulis Estate
To save space I have simplified attributions in the Comments column by leaving out the names of the individuals involved. Ex C. de Insulis or ex A. de Insulis means it was fomerly a property belonging to Celestine or Alexander de Insulis; similarly with ex Cameron, ex Glengarry or ex Kildun.
Culkabok means Grant of Culkabok; Freuchie means Grant of Freuchie; Brahan means Mackenzie of Brahan (who was son and heir to Mackenzie of Kintail); Kildun means Dingwall of Kildun; Kintail means Mackenzie of Kintail. Full details of the transactions and the individuals involved can be found in the accompanying text file. If a value is in plain text it means it is a repeat and is not to be double-counted.

* Balmacara: 1 davach in RMS IV (204) 1548; ½ davach in OPS II, II, p 396. See below and Lochalsh table for further discussion.
** Eddircarron: ½ davach in RMS IV (204) 1548; ¼ davach in OPS II, II, p 400. See below and Lochcarron table for further discussion.
*** Inverrew: ½ davach in RMS IV (204) 1548 & OPS II, II, p 409; ¼ davach in RMS IV (2273) 1574. See below and Loch Broom table for further discussion.
The documents used in the above table are as follows:
- a) ALI (102) 1472 confirmed by RMS II (2281.1) 1495. The lands are not named
- b) ALI (122) 1492 confirmed by RMS II (2281.2) 1495. Spelling variations in the latter are Achenadariache, Culthnok, Acheae (instead of Acheas). Although the total value in Lochcarron is 6m this figure is not given in any document. Strome Carronach is NE of Strome and should be regarded as a different property.
Doun is referred to as ‘quarterium’ (quarterland) in 1492 & 1527-8. In 1539 it is a ‘quarta parte’ (fourth part) of Doune. Acheinche is ‘tribus quarteriis’ (three quarters) – perhaps the rest of the same davach.
- c) GD93/46 1524 mentions 3 properties in the strath of Loch Broom as warrandice lands.
- d) RMS III (534) 1527-8 James confirms the lands in a) & b) above to Ewen Cameron of Lochiel. The lands of Kishorn are still not named. As for Lochalsh & Lochcarron the places and valuations are the same but there are frequent spelling variations. The names now read: Achenadariach & Lundy; Fayrnagmore; Cuylohir & Achmoir; Fayrnaegveg & Fynimain & Acheachye; Achchonelyth & Brayeyntrahe; Culthnok & Achnacloich & Blaregarrewe & Achiae; Awnarnys & Ochtertere; (Lochalsh); Doune; Acheinche; (Lochcarron). (The word quarteriis is missing by Acheinche).
- e) GD176/50 & GD93/57 1546 record that ½ of Erbusaig was given to Munro of Foulis by Angus ‘Yla’ of Glengarry.
- f) RMS IV (203) 1548 gives 2½m in Lochcarron – and then lists ¼ davach Auchnaschallauch, ¼ davach Dalmartyne and ½ davach Torredaill. There are 2 problems here. Firstly these total 1 davach which we could expect to be worth 4m not 2½m. Secondly whilst Auchnaschallauch and Dalmartyne are undoubtedly in Lochcarron there is no surviving place-name like Torredaill. There is a Torredaill in Kilchrist (later Urray) parish but this is on the other side of the country and I don’t think can be meant here. Another possibility is that Torredaill is meant for Torridon. This is confirmed by later documents. Retours (Ross) (12) 1584 gives half Torrerdone while ER XXI p 529 1586 gives half Tarirdin. This section of RMS IV (203) 1548 is undoubtedly a muddle in terms of values and locations. Retours (Ross) (179) 1611 – which deals with these Grant of Culcabok lands 73 years later – also refers to ‘half of the lands of Torredaill’.
The second portion of lands is 5m of Ewen Cameron’s 14m holding in Lochalsh. Ewen Cameron’s lands were divided between the two recipients. He had 14m but 5m went to Grant of Culcabok, the other 9m to Grant of Freuchie.
- g) RMS IV (204) 1548 starts by giving Ewen Cameron’s 9m of Lochalsh. This, with the 5m in RMS IV (203) given above, made up his full quota of 14m. What is slightly confusing is that one of the properties: Fernabeg, Finneman & Auchecroy had actually been split between the two Grant recipients. Each got ¼ davach or half of the 2m or ½ davach property. I presume Auchecroy is a mistake for Acheache.
Culchnok & Achenacloich & Blargarwe & Acheas in 1492 – the last property of which seems to be missing in 1548 but seems to reappear as Achich in the next holding on the list. There is likly to be a simple mistake here.
The difference between the 12m and 13m valuations of Kishorn is probably because Strome Castle itself was worth 1m. In the 12m account it is additional, in the 13m account it is included.
Some of the valuations in the 12m Lochalsh omit the word davach but I think the intention is clear enough.
The davach and merkland valuations do not match for Glengarry’s Lochalsh lands. In davach terms the total comes to 3⅛ davachs. 12m implies 3 davachs.
Precepts for charters RMS IV (203-4) are listed in RSS III (2761-2). No detail is given in the printed volume but the editors of OPS obviously studied the original. Their readings throw up a couple of anomalies:
RMS IV (204) 1548 refers to ½ Ballimac(c)roy extending to a davach. OPS II, II, 396 refers to a ½ davach of Ballimchroy. Kildun’s sale to Brahan in RMS IV (969) 1554 does not give a value but can only have been half Balmacara. The only other document which gives a valuation is RMS VI (1879) 1607 which has Glengarry’s share as ‘half of Balmacarra extending to a davach’ – i.e the same as in RMS IV (204) 1548. If we accept the RMS version then the parish total is 11 davachs (44m) rather than 10 (40m). Given that we have three other pieces of evidence that Lochalsh totalled 40m, (see Lochalsh text summary), the OPS version seems more likely.
RMS IV (204) refers to ½ davach Eddar-dalquharrane. OPS II, II, 400 refers to a ¼ davach of Dalquharrane. The 1607 figure for Glengarry’s share agrees with OPS so I have adopted this.
Inverew is a ½ davach in RMS IV (204) 1548. It is a ¼ davach in RMS IV (2273) 1574. (Each of these is only referring to half the property). I have taken the latter to be more accurate on the very slight evidence of CS229/MC/11/5 1825 which refers to ½ davach of Inverew.
Cragy & Harsa present us with a problem. Harsa is probably Erbusaig and Glengarry’s half was given to Munro in 1546. Perhaps only the superiority was going to Grant of Freuchie.
The davach and merkland valuations do not match for Glengarry’s Lochcarron lands. In davach terms 1⅛ davachs are listed which would have a nominal value of 4½ merks. 4m 20d implies 1 and 1/32nd davach since 20d is ⅛ of a merk and there were 4 merks to a davach.
17m 40d in Loch Broom implies 4 davachs (16m) + a quarter davach (1m) + 1/16th davach (40d is ¼ of 1merk).
Crunnort-Muergoseill looks like a combination of Gruinard & Mungasdale.
½ bovate of Auchnaschew in 1548 (or Auchanewye in 1572) would be 1/16th of a davach.
The davach and merkland valuations do not match for Glengarry’s Loch Broom lands. In davach terms we have 5 + 3/16ths davachs. In merklands terms we have 17¼m which suggests 4 + 5/16ths davachs. One or other must be mistaken but it is impossible to say which or where.
- h) RMS IV (969) 1554 – Royal confirmation of Thomas Kildun’s sale of the half of his lands of Lochalsh. The lands are named but no values are given. Since the names of these lands match exactly with the 12m of Glengarry’s Lochalsh lands which are named in RMS IV (204) 1548 we can conclude that each property was halved between the two families. This means that the total value of Glengarry and Kildun’s share of Celestine’s Lochalsh estate was 24m or 6 davachs. (The davach total would be 6¼ davachs). If we add 14m (3½ davachs) for Cameron lands in Lochalsh, which were also once Celestine’s, this takes us to 38m or 9½ davachs.
- i) RMS IV (2270) 1574 John Grant of Freuchie sells 12m Lochalsh to Glengarry. The list matches earlier lists of this 12 merkland but omits Glengarry’s half of Erbusaig which had been granted by Angus of Glengarry to Munro in 1546. He also sells 4m of Lochcarron. The places which are named amount to ⅞ of a davach – according to other documents – which is actually 3½m not 4.
- j) RMS IV (2273) 1574 concerns Freuchie’s sale of half of Loch Broom to Mackenzie of Kintail – who was married to Freuchie’s daughter. These were originally Glengarry’s lands. This charter is extremely useful because the first 3 entries make it crystal clear that only half of each property is being referred to – and gives the value of that half. This prevents any ambiguity. There is one difference between this charter and that of 1548 which is that the value of Glengarry’s half of Inverew is claimed to be only a ¼ davach – not a ½ davach.
- k) RMS IV (2284) 1574 – Royal grant to Glengarry. Essentially a repeat of RMS IV (2270) 1574.
- l) RSS VIII (1484) 1583 is a gift to Glengarry of the nonentry of the erstwhile Cameron lands in Lochalsh, Kishorn and Lochcarron. The descriptions are, for the most part, restricted to one property in each group. ‘Blair, Rairf’ is probably for Blaregarwe which was usually part of another group of properties so it looks as if errors are beginning to creep in. In the Lochcarron section Arineckaig appears for the first time. Slomba is reduced from 20s to 10s. There is a new entry for Mid Strome, Strome Castle & Reraig at 30s. (There is a Reraig in each of Lochcarron and Lochalsh).
In 1472 the Camerons had received 12m in Kishorn + Strome Castle – probably 13m in all. In 1492 they received 14m in Lochalsh and 6m in Lochcarron. They now held 32m or 33m in the Lochcarron, Kishorn and Lochalsh area. The 1583 document only accounts for 29¼m of this estate. Because of these anomalies I have not included the 1583 values in my calculations.
- m) RMS V (665) 1583-4 is royal confirmation of a contract dated 30/5/1579 by which John Dingwall of Kildun sold to Mackenzie of Kintail his half of lands in Lochcarron and the superiority of half of Dalmartin which had been feued to Roderick Bane. Braklache and Achechull have not appeared before so I am uncertain where they were. There is a Brecklach in Loch Broom parish but Brecklach and Achachoull (apparently in Lochcarron) appear in Retours (Ross) (79) 1633. They may be lost place-names in Lochcarron. They also appear in RMS X (440) 1655. The lands of ½ Dalmartin had been feued to the late Roderick Bane so only the superiority was sold.
Overall the Lochcarron lands in this document largely match with the lists of Glengarry lands in Lochcarron. Since the Glengarry lands are described as 4m 20d + 2½m in 1548 we can deduce that the de Insulis estate in Lochcarron amounted to 13¼m ((2 x 4m 20d = 8m 40d) + (2 x 2½m = 5m) = 13m 40d). This does not include the 6m that had been given to the Camerons in 1492.
- m) Retours (Ross) (12) 5/11/1584 gives Glengarry as heir to his grandmother, Margaret de Ilis, in half Auchnell, half Arimachlag, half Torrerdone & fisheries, half Auchinsellach – lying in Lochcarron. Of these Torrerdone must be Torridon – with its sea fisheries while Auchinsellach (Achnashellach) does lie in Lochcarron. Arimachlag is Arineckaig, also in Lochcarron, which is the only settlement in the parish which begins with the prefix ‘Ari-‘. (See also ER XXI p 529 1586 where it is Arinachtage. Auchnell is probably a corruption but I do not know what for. I am also unsure how Glengarry had possession of some of these Lochcarron lands.
- n) RMS VI (1879) 1607 is a royal grant to Mackenzie of Kintail of most of the ‘de Insulis’ estate. Included are Glengarry’s half of Lochalsh, Lochcarron and Kishorn, 9m of Ewen Cameron’s lands in Lochalsh, 13m of Ewen Cameron’s lands of Kishorn with Strome Castle, 12m of Glengarry’s lands in Lochalsh, 4m 20d of Glengarry’s estate in Lochcarron. By this stage there had been over a century of copying place-names and values with the inevitable corruptions creeping in.
