Dingwall is one parish where we have early evidence of acres. CWMF (22, 29, 35, 40, 54 & 199) prove acres in Dingwall between 1490 and 1638 whilst CWMF (43) mentions a half-acre in nearby Petglasse in 1520. However see D & S Macdonald, Scottish Place-Name News No 32, Spring 2012, p 5, where aiker is discussed as a loan-word into Gaelic.
I have limited evidence for land-assessments in Dingwall parish. My best estimate is that it was a minimum of 3¾ davachs. However some valuations are undoubtedly missing and Dingwall’s importance in Norse times as the ‘field of the thing’ (assembly) suggests this total is too modest. If the parish was the economic base for the thanage it would be good to be able to quantify this.
The mair of the barony (=mairdom) of Bray Ross had a croft in Dingwall (RS36/2/176r 1607). Bray Ross (=Bràigh Ross or the upper part of Ross) extended west of Knokreavach (NH 5561 – Kiltearn parish).
