The above table separates Glenshiel from Kintail but in earlier times the combined parishes were simply known as Kintail.

Cummisaig

There is a Garbhan Cosach (NG 8023) on the coast near the boundary with Glenelg. The spellings Coysage (GD128/23/1/3 1594) and Coysag in 1633 may indicate this. The davach would include the farms along the northern shore of the peninsula.

Lettirfearne

Although Lettirfearn now has a particular location the davach will have included farms along this south-western shore of Loch Duich. (Leachachan, Muck, Ratagan etc).

Glenshiel

Glenshiel is a long glen running SE from the head of Loch Duich. Farms include Torrlaoighseach, Achadh nan Seileach, Achadh Arsgalain, Malagan & Achnangart.

Glenlichd

Glenlichd branches off Strath Croe and runs southeast roughtly parallel to Glen Shiel. Farms include Achagerk (Gordon/Blaeu: Extima Scotiae).

Lettirchall

I am not sure what farms Lettirchall included. In the documents it tends to appear just before Strath Croe and the first element of the name would suggest the slopes of a loch or range of hills. Macfarlane’s Geographical Collections II p 541 states:

Item the countrey of Kantell is devyded in twa parts viz Lettyr Airn nearest Loch Duich and Letyr Choylle nearest Glen Elcheg.

A few pages further on, within a description of Kintail, we read:

Upon this river of Shiel also is a fair hollyn wood cald Letyr Choulynn.

The Gordon/Blaeu map of Extima Scotiae marks Letyr Chowlin on the north side of Glen Shiel, east of Malagan.

It seems there are two sets of slopes here, each characterised by a type of tree. Watson (PNRC p 179) gives Leitir Choill (Hazel slope) as ‘the district from west of Clachan Dubhthaich to the burn from Coire Dhuinnid’. That is the SE section of the N side of Loch Duich – still forested today.

Strath Croe

Strath Croe runs ENE from the north-eastern corner of the head of Loch Duich. Farms include Ruarach, Lienassie & Dorusduain. Watson (PNRC p 178) states that in 1727 Ruarach was ‘divided into Mickle Oxgate, Middle Oxgate and Culmuiln’. That means Ruarach was at least a quarter-davach.

Keppoch to R Ling

The 3 davachs are described as lying between the water of Keppoch and the water of Lung. The Keppoch probably ran into Loch Duich at NG 8923; the River Ling enters the River Elchaig (and then Loch Long) at NG 9330. The land between these two points was worth 3 davachs but this included all the lands, such as Glen Elchaig, which stretched eastwards from the coast.

Camas-Luinie (NG 9428) lies on the south side of Glen Elchaig. This might be the same as Camislyle which is referred to in RS36/2/198v 1607. That document describes a quarterland as the third part of Camislyle. (Camislyle here might be both the name of the farm and the name of a larger unit which took its name from the main farm).

Clunoboll

This is potentially significant as one of the few -boll names on the mainland West coast. However Watson (PNRC p 179) discounts this.
