Balachladdich     NH 5963/ 5964 HCA D270 GD93/296 1700 almost implies a davach but I doubt this. It seems to have been divided between Easter Fowlis and Katewell.

Kiltearn

Kiltearn

CWMF (37) 1508 refers to 11m old ferms (i.e. old rents) which may suggest a whole davach. However GD93/161 of 1616 (CWMF (161)) and GD93/303-5 of 1708 (CWMF (303)) indicate a half-davach in total. North half of Kiltearne called Teanaird (?Teanord NH 5964) referred to in CWMF (254) 1673.

South half of Kiltearn referred to in CWMF (179) 1625. South half of Kiltearn a ¼ davach in CWMF (303) 1708.

There was also a ‘yair’ (tidal fish-trap) of Kiltearn and an obligation on other properties – ‘according to the rate and quantity of the plough and davach lands thereof’ – to pay for its upkeep. (See GD103/1/127 1630). This is a useful reminder of how the land-assessment system underlay so much of the rural economy. We find the same in documents concerning properties in Nigg parish – in their case towards the ‘yair’ of Kincardine. The obligation is defined as proportionate to the rate and quantity of the plough and davoch lands of the barony of Nigg. (See GD86/373 1607).

Drummond/Drum

Earlier called Drum, variant spellings include Drimmen & Drummis. The ‘whole town of Drwme’ supported a chaplainry from at least 1379-80 (CWMF (12), GD93/12) and returned 9m p.a. in 1549 (CWMF (61), GD93/61). See also Retours (Ross) (29) 1608 and RS36/2/372r 1608. CWMF (306) 1708 refers to ‘the lands of Drummond called the Chaplane lands of Drumm’. GD93/382 1761 (CWMF (382)) says ‘¼ davoch lands of Drummond called Kiltearn’.

Balconie

Balconie supported a chaplainry called St Monan’s. See OPS II, II p 478, RMS IV (508) of 1550 (which refers to church lands of Toulis in Kiltearn), RSS V Pt I (2355) 1565 & Retours (Ross) (183) of 1623. GD305/1/162/304 1695 & GD305/1/57/1 1785 refer to the Mair’s croft in Balconie. RS37/3/151r 1625 refers to ¾ davach of Balconie with fishery, yair, Fluikaris croft, Dempsteris croft and ailhouse.

Ardullie

It is a little ambiguous but the lands and salmon fishings of Ardullie may have been part of the davach of Wester Fowlis. See CWMF (113) 1587, (262) 1676, (362) 1743.

Foulis

GD93/5 1350-71 provides evidence that davachs were valued at 10m each by the late fourteeenth century. The davach of Easter Fowlis was exchanged for the davach of Petmadwy ‘with warrandice to the extent of an equivalent 10m land’. According to CWMF (113) 1587 the davach of Easter Fowlis was linked with (included?) ‘the lands of Culskae (Culnaskeath NH 5763), Taychatt (Teachatt NH 5864), Westir Ballachladdy (Balachladdich NH 5963), Achachleych (Achleach NH 5564) and crofts thereof’. These lands are reiterated in CWMF (262) 1676 & (362) 1743. Both Easter & Wester Foulis had sheilings in Strath Sgitheach. Wester Fowlis may have included the lands and salmon fishings of Ardullie (qv).

Culnaskeath

This was held by the doctors to the family of Munro of Foulis. See GD93/71 1557; GD93/75 1560; GD93/133 1591; GD93/134 1592; RS36/2/372r 1608; J Bannerman, The Beatons, pp 71-74.

Katewell

Katewell with ‘fortyr’ of Badgarwy (NH 5368/5468) in GD93/6 1369 (CWMF (6)). In 1587 CWMF (113) expands this by listing ‘the davach lands of Catoll with the lands of Eistir Ballechladdy (Balachladdich NH 5963), grazings of Badegarvy (Badgharbhaidh NH 5368/5468) and scheillingis of Letir Waves (slopes of Ben Wyvis), and with the isle of Lochglas (Eilean na Faoileig NH 5370), with houses & buildings pertaining thereto, with ale-houses and crofts’. CWMF (262) 1676 expands this further: ‘shielings of Litter Vavess, Kilnisie (Culzie? NH 5271, Coille Chaolaisidh is at NH 4973), Corrawackie (Corravachie NH 4873), Cubreach, Imrichindou, Beinagoine, Carnloch Nanichin, the hill of Fea, Virgill Andris, Tamcoinach, Carnfeavanvarrar, Ballach Collie, and isle of Lochglas’.In CWMF (362) 1743 this list reads: ‘sheallings of Letter Waves, Kilishy, Corrivackie, Lubreoch, Imrichindow, Benimonie, Keanlochninachin, the mount of Feavugillandrish, Tomcoriech, Carnafiavanvorar Rie, Bellachollie & isle of Lochglass’. Keatoll in RS36/2/369v 1608.

The marches between Corravachie and Kanochbrach (Alness parish) are referred to in CWMF (297) 1701.

Swordale

Swordale seems to have been subdivided at various times. CWMF (168) 1619 says Ridorach (NH 5667) was a pendicle. RS37/3/150r 1625 gives a bovate called Leadchairne. (However RS38/8/110r 1722 also gives Leadnacarne as a pendicle of Clyne so there is an ambiguity here).

GD93/220 1659 refers to the ‘mid-quarter’ with pendicle called ‘Rhidorrach and Croatnorie’. GD93/275 1686 refers to 3 oxgates and pendicle called Knockmartine (Knockmartin NH 567670). Five oxgates are described in CWMF (382) 1761 as Easter and Mid Swordale with the pendicles of Rhidorach, Knockmartine, Croftnorie, Kiaunginnoich & Drummore. 16s bondages from 1539 in ER. GD93/225 1663 ‘mairdom’ of Ferrin Donald.

Clare

According to CWMF (113) 1587 the lands of Clair Moir (Clare NH 5465) included the ‘grazings of Altnageirach (Allt nan Caorach? NH 5367) and forest of Waves (Wyvis)’. These lands are reiterated in CWMF (262) 1676 but with the addition of Easter Hairo & Kilaich, Corrinserrach & Corrimoire, Sookach, Lucht, Corri, Corrinafoull, Corrindogg & Aldchouir. In CWMF (362) 1743 they read Easterhairro & Killach, Corrinasirach (?Coire Misirich NH 4969), Corrimoir (Coire Mor NH 4867/4868), Soccach (An t-Socach NH 4768), Luchcorrie, Corunafeol (Coire na Feola NH 4767), Corrinadog & Aldchonirie (?Allt a’ Choin Idhir NH 4864).

Lemlair

The components of Lemlair appear in GD93/110 1587 which is a tack of teinds. GD93/170 1619 suggests Aldmolaiche may have been a boundary.

Clyne

Reg. Mor pp 333-4 No 259. GD93/128 1590 gives a pendicle of Little Clyne called Laidnagarne. Retours (Ross) (160) 1696 lists the pendicles of Clyne as Altalait (NH 5560) and Leidcharn (also in GD93/291 1696). RS38/8/110r 1722 gives Altnalaite and Leadnacarne as pendicles of Clyne. See also PNRC p 279.

RS38/2/156v 1664 states that a quarterland of Mekle Clyne was called Ballichadow/Ballachadow. (Unfortunately this document is inconsistent).

RS38/8/109r 1722 offers a more detailed breakdown of the constituent parts of Mickle Clyne.

Lemlair

CWMF (335) 1732 lists the following lands which may have been counted as part of Lemlair: Cultafarquhar, Old Lands & Cruachin, Bognahawn, Easter & Wester Culbinsfuaranbuy & ward. In CWMF (388) 1762 these are Cultofarquhar, Oldtown, Cruochin, Bognahaven (?NH 5464), Easter & Wester Culbins (NH 5663) & ward, and Fuarunbuy (NH 5663), half of the moss of Bogindurie.
