Logie

OPS II, II, 457 (quoting RSS) claims Logy extended to a davach (which is possible if we include the church lands of Ulladale). RMS VII (329) 1610 (original 1607) details some of the lands included in the ¼ davach of Logie as: the fields of Riharrald, Auldmuiramoir, Achimmoir & the Bus of Preischachleif; the mosses of Brinknach & Derrileane; sheilings and grazings bounded by the cairn called Cairnn-namarrow or Deidmaniscairne and the burn called Aldainalbinache or Scottismenisburne (Scotsburn). See PNRC pp 59-60 for identifications. See Macgill pp 341-342 No 869 1719 for details of boundaries. Also RS37/5/47r 1633, RS37/5/70v 1633, RS38/2/198v 1664.

Calrossie

RMS II (1227) of 1475-6 says extending to 10m which would be a davach – but there is no mention of Drummethat. GD305/1/32/4 1673 refers to the davach lands of Culross and Drummoddat. GD305/1/112/378 1673 lists them in a sequence of davachs. ER VIII p 592 ff of 1476-9 gives them the same grain rentals. ER XVII pp 663-4 1539 gives them the same grain rentals and bondage silver. OPS II, II, 467 gives them almost the same rate (8s 4d/8s) for ‘bondage silver’ in 1586 and so, probably, does RMS V (1331) of 1587. This rate was standard for half a davach in this part of Ross so most of the evidence suggests that each farm was half a davach.

Pitmaduthy

Pytmadwe & Ballelon a davach in SC29/1/1 f40r & f40v 1558. Petmadwyth a davach in RSS VII (486) 1575-6. Later seems to have been divided into 2 parts: ¾ davach & ¼ davach. Auchnaton (PNRC p 59) was the ¼ of Pitmaduthy which lay next to Drumgill (Retours (Ross) (66) 1623, (150) 1691). Watson equates Auchnaton with Baile na tòin which appears as Balnalhoin in Gordon(20), Balnahoin in Blaeu(Moray), Balantoan in Roy(FC), Balntone in RHP13299/7 1808 and Balianloan in Thomson’s map. This will be the Ballelon of 1558 and lay c. NH 787759.

Morverach will be another version of Morrich or sea-plain referring to flat land by the sea. (See Petkenny under Kilmuir Easter parish for more on this).

Also called Pitcui (Macgill p 271 No 690, 1612); Pitticowy (Retours (Ross) (89) 1642); Pitcowie (Retours (Ross) (111) 1657).

Drumgill

An ‘oxgang’ waste in ER XIII pp 596-8 1507. Retours (Ross) 150 of 1681 tells us it lay next to Pitmaduthie (cf  PNRC p 59). GD305/1/55/12 of 1736 tells us it also lay adjacent to Meddat. Macgill p 270 No 687 1603 refers to the ‘western quarter of the lands of Drumgillie, called Achnaglack’. Pont(Gordon 20) places it close to the shore south of Glastullich. The first element ‘drum’ (< Gaelic druim ridge) suggests a more raised position perhaps near Shandwick House. ¾ in RS37/6/160r 1638, ¼ in RS38/2/69r 1663. Possibly = Drumdelgy in Roy(FC)?

Meddat (Meikle)

Meklemethat ER VIII pp 592-599 1476-9; Methat Meikill in ER XIII pp 596-8 1507 with a quarter ‘oxgang’ waste. Bondages in ER XVII p 664 1539 (and subsequently) suggest 1 davach. This property – often just called Meddat – lies east of the Balnagown River, as is clearly shown in Pont(Gordon 20). This suggests that Logie Easter parish stretched down to the sea at this point. GD305/1/55/12 1736.

RS37/3/330r 1627 refers to ¼ called Knokdow and a pendicle called Findoche.

GD305/1/162/316 1713 refers to Meadow of Blackhill; GD305/1/162/332 1791 refers to Blackhills. Roy(FC) marks Blackhill east of the Balnagown river. Blackhill is just a translation of Knokdow so we are likely referring to the same place. Finnach is marked by Pont(Gordon 20) on the coast, east of Meidmoir (= Meikle Meddat). Finnach is likely Findoche.

This is not the same as Miltoun of Meddat which lay west of the river in Kilmuir Easter parish. The documents don’t carry references to ‘Little’ Meddat. RMS II (1227) 1475-6 gives Meithate + 2 mills extending to10m p.a. and then Mekle-Meithaute worth the same. Since this document concerns the settlement made on Elizabeth, Countess of Ross, we can compare it with the evidence from the Exchequer Rolls which deals with the same estate. ER gives Mekle Methat and Myltoun of (Mekill) Methat (with 2 mills) – the bondages suggest each was a davach. It is clear that ‘Meithate’ of 1475-6 is actually Miltoun of Meddat. Pont(Gordon 20) marks two mills just above Miltoun Castle on the west side of the river.

PNRC p 62: ‘Local pronunciation has a tendency to Merret’. This is nicely illustrated in Roy’s map (Fair Copy) which gives Meritt.

Ulladale

In RMS VII (1668) 1617 the Reddendo is 10m and Ulladale included the crofts called Rifleuche and Riddorache (alias the Glen of Ulladill) as well as the wood called Dungowill. See also GD305/1/28/6 1637, Retours (Ross) (187) 1664. Macgill pp 359-60 No 908 1645 gives more detail. Also Macgill p 361 No 914 1682; p 362 No 917 1751; p 364 No 923 1664. PNRC pp 61 & 67.

Mill of Morwach

See under Pitmaduthy above and also Petkenny in Kilmuir Easter parish. GD305/1/71/41 1543, GD305/1/72/56 1627, GD305/1/73/64 & 65 1664, GD305/1/73/74 1676. It cannot be Milntoun of Meddat because sometimes both appear in the same document e.g. GD305/1/24/3 & 8 1627.

Mill Hill

Mill Hill lies south of the Balnagown River which presents a quandary. Should it not be in Kilmuir Easter parish? However RS38/2/68r 1663 clearly says ‘Loggie’ parish. Conceivably the parish boundary formerly ran further south here.
