Nigg

RMS V (201) 1581 on original of 1563, VI (371) 1595, (576) 1597, IX (202) 1634; ER XXIII pp 458 & 468 1596-7; GD1/48/3 of 1668, GD1/125/2 of 1625, GD1/125/3 of 1633, GD1/125/4 of 1625, GD1/125/6 of 1648, GD1/125/8 of 1672, GD1/125/9 of 1673, GD1/125/10 of 1673, GD1/125/11 of 1674, GD1/125/15 of 1763, GD1/287/1 of 1628, GD1/287/2 of 1630, GD1/287/4 of 1683, GD71/281 of 1669, GD86/373 of 1607; Retours (Ross) (119) 1662 – give numerous references to oxgangs or quarters of. One quarter was called Culnald; there was a bovate or oxgang called the Torrane and another called the Dam or Dame. The whole town is consistently a davach – e.g. RS36/2/341v 1608. Plans: RHP 680 1763, RHP 13299/12, HCA D554 1864.

Shandwick

Macgill pp 363-4 gives a 1568 reference to ‘the quarter lands of Shandwick’ and a 1612 reference to 20 bolls sowing in Auchincleiss in the wester part thereof. GD305/1/118/465 1622 specifies Croft Dodroy, Croft Nairn and Cromlaidmoir as parts of Sandwick.

Rarichie

Easter is 2 davachs in GD305/1/32/4 & GD305/1/112/378 of 1673; GD297/217/124 & GD305/1/112/379 of 1676. Retours (Ross) (165) 1698 specifies fuel rights in moors and mosses of Garrack. By inference Wester was also 2 davachs. However the monetary valuations are not always consistent. Retours (Ross) (110) 1657 refers to Wester Rarichie and Cullis (i.e. 3 davachs) having an Old Extent of £10 (15m) when we might expect it to be £8 (12m). (The same retour shows Wester Rarichie had fuel rights on the moors of Balnagown). In Retours (Ross) (146) 1688 the same lands are only given an Old Extent of £9 6s 8d or 14m. This is another example of inconsistency regarding OE valuations in the far north – particularly as given in the Retours. For the resolution of a boundary issue between c. 1509-1545 see Laing Charters No 495.

Plans: RHP 13299/13 1808  Hill of Rarichie, RHP 13299/14 1808  Easter Rarichie, RHP 13299/15 1808  Loans of Rarichie, RHP 82798 1765 Rarichie.

Pitcalzean

1/2 = 1/2 davach in RMS V (201) of 1581 (on original of 1563), RMS VI (2112) 1608 (on original of 1607), GD86/373 of 1607, RS36/2/341v 1608, Retours (Ross) (119) 1662. 1/4 = 1/4 davach in RMS V (381) of 1581-2. Macgill No 897 1644 refers to the 5 oxgang lands of Pitkelzean. GD1/287/5 1775 refers to 7 oxgangs of Pitcalyean. RMS V (202) 1581; RSS VIII (2300) 1584; RS36/2/377r 1608; RS37/7/15r 1648; Retours(Ross) (161) 1696.

Bayfield/Ankerville or Kindeace

GD146/22/26 of 1610, GD146/23/40 of 1625, GD146/24/2 of 1648. Retours (Ross) (66) 1623 & (84) 1636 give East Kindeace as £3 (4½m) Old Extent. This might imply 1⅛ davachs but since the valuation includes the alehouse and alehouse croft it is more likely to have been a davach. This is confirmed by RS37/1/137v 1619 & RS37/7/81r 1650.

Wester Kindeis (or part of it) was often linked with Dunilaern in Strathcarron (Kincardine parish) (q.v). Meikle Kindeace also = Killdeathies in Macgill p 362, No 917, 1751.

Watson (PNRC p 53) comments on name-change but Macgill p 194 No 489 shows Anckrwill in 1679.

Culnaha

RMS VII (482) on original of 1608, GD1/187/8 of 1610, GD1/187/13-14 of 1664.

Cullisse

1 davach Culluys in OPS II II p 455 quoting Balnagown Charters. In GD297/179 1398 this is Cullyns. RSS I (3967) 1528 gives 7m Cullace.

SC29/1/1 f40r & f40v 1558 gives ¾. Retours (Ross) (89) 1642 refers to Cullis alias Cullenderie. However I have kept their extents separate since Cullisse was lay while Culderarie was ex bishopric.

RHP 219 1761 shows the boundary between Cullisse and Meikle Allan. For the resolution of an earlier boundary dispute affecting ‘Coles’ between c. 1509-1545 see Laing Charters No 495. William de Culenlis was a witness to GD93/1 1299-1311.
