Assynt Table

Assynt

For this table I have changed the normal layout. From 1774 we have John Home’s Survey of Assynt – whose farms I have listed in the leftmost column. In OSA Vol 16 No 8 and OPS II, II p 696 we find another listing – this time organised by davach, which I have given in the second column. Although we currently lack individual valuations it may, in time, be possible to work these out from other evidence such as rentals.

Blaeu(ES) = the Gordon/Blaeu map ‘Extima Scotiae’.

Under Map Sources, an entry such as H1 means Farm No 1 on the Map of John Homes’s Survey published by the Scottish History Society in 1960.

313/3585/ + number: refers to the plans visible on the NLS Digital Map Library. (See text file for detail).

Oldany

Oldany Island was Jura in 1386 (Caithness and Sutherland Records Vol I, Part VII, No 132, pp 173-4, London, 1913).

Oldany Island was Island Diura in GD84/1/11/15 1636. Dewroy in GD 84/1/12/1 1634.

Kirkton

In Home’s survey of 1774 Kirktown is described with the ox-gates of Culack, Camore and Glendu. Culack is probably the Culin of 1793. Under ‘Observations’ Home writes:

‘Kirktown comprehending the Manse, Culack, Camore and Glendu … both Culack and Camore are presently let to the Parson and have been let to his predecessors. … There is no farm in the height of Assint that can weigh with the above possession if consider’d as a grazing Farm having the best Aspect to the Sun and being one continued Tract of Lime-Stone’.

It is difficult to be certain but it seems as though Kirkton may have consisted of at least 3 oxgates. As with so many early ecclesiatical sites it comprised some of the best land in the neighbourhood. Even if it became lay after the Reformation it appears that the ministers retained practical possession, if not legal title.

Kirktown = Achnahiglash (OSA p 202).

Kirktoun, Balnaheglise or Achnahiglash at the East end of Loch Assynt (OPS II, II p 693). Church & B-G marked on OS 6″ 1st Series Sutherland Sheet LXXI 1875 at NC 249220.

NB Presence of both Kirkton and Inverkirkaig suggests two early churches.

Auldyvulin etc

OPS II, II p 696 fn 1 (following OSA p 182) says the underwritten, then in Criech, may have formerly belonged to the parish of Assynt:

Auldyvulin

Auldanfarn

Strathkeskach (Strath-ses-kach)

Knockhurny (Knock-kurny)

Glaswel

OSA spellings (where significantly different) are given in brackets.
