9d Petterkassie in NLS Dep.313/3312 1674.

The Ord will be that specified above at NC 5705. Since the Ord was probably ½ a davach Pitarxie itself would be a davach. But see also under Gruids below.

Total c. 15½

davachs

The total of 90d in 1623 suggests 15 davachs.

Lairg

In 1275 Largge is given as 4 davachs which suggests that one davach became detached between 1275 & 1509. 3 davachs of Lairg in 1611 (NLS 313/477 p 284, quoted in Bangor-Jones p 157).

Gruids

OPS II, II p 698 states that in 1554 Walter Seytoun resigned the lands of Grwde extending to 7 davachs, namely:

Clunok (Clinol=9d), Pettarquhasty (Pitarxie=9d), the Ord of Petfure (Pitfuir=9d) with the mill, Auchanne (3d) and Plaid (6d).

After each farm I have added in brackets the pennyland valuation in 1623. These total 36d or 6 davachs (although Pitfuir may not have been included). Perhaps Gruid itself was the seventh davach.

On this (1554) reading the Ord is associated with Pitfuir rather than Pitarxie (as in 1623).

Bangor-Jones p 157 (quoting NLS 175/85) says that the barony of Gruids was known as ‘the 6 daaches of Gruid’ in 1682 but that the tenants’ possessions were calculated in pennylands.

The Barony of Gruids was extensive. Thomson’s map of Sutherland in 1823 (EMS.s.712(26)) marks Shealings of Gruides, Point of Gruides, Shealings of Gruides taking up much of the west bank of Loch Shin.

Brae Chat

Literally ‘the heights of (the province of) Cat’ – which was Caithness + Sutherland. NE of Loch Shin in Blaeu. Contained the forest of Dirimeanigh (OPS II, II p 697). For discussion see text file ‘The Geography of Sutherland’.

Aqhaqhasse

OPS II, II p 698  suggests this property was in Lairg parish. I  think it was probaby Astle in Dornoch parish – part of the Torboll estate.

Astraydaill in Brachat

OPS II, II p 699 fn 2 gives a reference to the lands of Astraydaill in Brachat which ‘seem to lie in Lairg’. This is problematic because other references to these lands imply Astle in Dornoch. (See Torboll table under column ‘h’ for discussion).
