RMS VII (1508) 1616 gives the following properties in Dunnet: Nethir Greilland, half Dunnat and mill, Rattir, Greneland, Barrak, Inkstak.

Thomson’s map of 1822 suggests Murza may have been in Dunnet – bordering Bower parish. However, RMS VII (1508) 1616, puts it in Bower (q.v.)..

Dunnet

GD96/102 1564, on original of 1525, refers to 14½d in Dunnet. There also seems to have been another portion of Dunnet:

RMS III (1798) 1538 refers to 6½d of Dunnet whilst RMS V (1341) 1587, RMS VII (766) 1612 and Retours (Caithness) (22) 1644 give 7d Dunnet. (These 4 documents all seem to be referring to the same part of Dunnet). 7d of Dunnet in RMS XI (53) 1661. 14½d + 6½ d= 21d which would be 3½ davachs @ 6d per davach.

Sutherland, Caithness 1770 to 1832, pp 29-30 gives 6¼d Dunnet in 1596.

RS36/2/116v 1606 refers to 4d in Donett (ex Oliphant).

See also RMS IV (2130) 1572-3.

Henderson, J., Caithness Family History, p 210, gives ¼d in 1634.

GD112/58/17/20 1667 – an ‘octo’ (=⅛d). RS20/1/p 233 1668 gives ¾d.

Broch (possible) – Links of Dunnet ND 222696.

Greenland

Wester Greenland was 18d (or 1 ounceland or 3 davachs @ 6d) in 1467-8 (RMS II (942) 1467-8, (1300) 1477). Easter Greenland was 18d ‘old extent’ in RS36/2/304v 1607. A 2-ounceland or 6-davach farm would be a very important unit. Nether Greneland and Wester Clith (Latheron parish) were Thomas Scarlat’s in Robertson’s Index p 122 No 111 <= 1377 or 1378. See also RMS I (666) 1377-8; RSS I (3433) 1526, GD112/58/1/1 1526, RMS III (476) 1527, (3165) 1545; RMS V (2078) 1592. ER XVIII pp 380-1, 384, 1543-5. ER XXI p 525 1586.

Broch (possible) – Ha’ of Greenland ND 249670.

Rattar

Rattar seems to have been much subdivided.

RMS III (1798) 1538 refers to 2 separate portions of Rattar which appear to total 1¾d (the reading in OPS II, II p 790 differs to mine). These belonged to the Keiths and they recur in RMS V (1341) 1587 – also in two separate parts. One portion was 1d but the register has apparently had this corrected to 2d. The other portion is definitely ¾d. In total the Keiths had either 1¾d or 2¾d. RMS VII (766) 1612 suggests the latter. 2¼d in RMS XI (53) 1661.

RMS V (2078) 1592 gives 2½d belonging to the earl of Caithness. This may be confirmed in Retours (Caithness) (22) 1644 which reads ‘obulata terrae lie Fardingland’ – which could mean ½d (plus) ¼d OR ½d (called) the farthingland.

The total is therefore either 4¼d or 5¼d. I have gone with the latter.

Broch (possible) – Ratter ND 250737.

Broch (possible) – Rattarburn ND252738.

Reaster

In Retours (Caithness) (5) 1604 there is reference to 1d Bassetter after Corsbak and before Grenland. I think this is a mis-spelling because it seems to appear as Ressatarie in Retours (Caithness) (7) 1605 and Ressetterie in Retours (Caithness) (22) 1644. It is probably the Rasister of OPS II, II p 790 quoting RSS for 1549.
