RMS VII (1508) 1616 gives the following properties in Olrig: Olrik, a two-part (⅔) of Taine and Scoricleit, Murkle-be-eist. The editor suggests Scoricleit may be Swarclett. (Dirain [Durran] is added later in the document).
Roy(FC) marks a Swarclet to south of Hoy. It is Swarclett in OS 6″ 1st Series Caithness Sheet XII 1872 at ND 2162.
Olrig
In RMS IV (2437) 1575 (on original of 1561) Olrig contained two church pennylands called Nethirsyde and Ovirsyde of Olrik. Each paid 20s per annum.
RMS VI (1467) 1603, on original of 1600, gives these as part of the bishopric lands:
‘2 church pennylands of the rectory of Olrik, one to the lower side of the township of Olrik called Nether-syid and the other on the upper side (Over-syid), with houses and 2 crofts annexed to them (occupied by Hugo Millar and Henry Robertson [or Richartsoun]), with a house occupied by ‘Joannem’ Wilsoun and a croft adjacent, with teind sheaves included of the said 2 pennylands and 3 crofts … and with the meadow lie Persones-medow [the Parson’s meadow] next to the cemetery of the parish church of Olrik’. [Rector also named].
See also RS20/1/p 165 1662.
GD112/58/102/3 1696, GD112/58/102/4 1696 & GD112/58/102/5 1696 all give a wadset of 2⅞d in Netherside of Olrig. This will have been additional to the church pennyland of Netherside.
Sutherland, Caithness 1770 to 1832, pp 29-30 states 10d Olrig in 1596.
It may be that Olrig consisted of 2 x 6d units with 1d of each allocated to the church.
Wester
5d in GD112/58/102/3 1696, GD112/58/102/4 1696, GD112/58/102/5 1696.
Stangergill
RS20/1/p 296 1672 refers to the ‘lands of half Scatland in the toun of Stangergill’.
GD112/58/102/3 1696 gives 4½d East Stangergale + a wadset of a further 2¼d (= 6¾d).
GD112/58/102/4 1696 & GD112/58/102/5 1696 give 5d East side Stangergill + a wadset of a further 2¼d + ¼d on the East side of Stangergill called Houstrie + ½d between the burns of Stangergill above Harland. Assuming all these were properly Stangergill the total is 8d in 1696. There remains ambiguity about how much in east and west respectively.
Broch (possible) Castlehill – ND 193687.
