Ballicherry ¼ davach?   NH 7064   Between Braelangwell & Ardoch. Watson (PNRC p 123) suggests “Bail’ a’ cheathraimh, town of the quarter (davach)”.
Ardoch (½ davach) 1671 NH 7164 Blaeu(Moray) = Poyntzfield (PNRC p 123).

Macgill p 61 No 144.

Davach of the Croft 1 davach 1671     Macgill p 61 No 144. I have assumed it lay in Kirkmichael but see also Cromarty table under Farness.
Subtotal 4¼ davachs
Total 10½ davachs

Culbo

RMS IV (1225) 1557 (original 1556) suggests Eister Culbo was a half-davach then. RMS VIII (356) 1622 & RS37/3/333r 1627 confirm it as a half-davach.

Macgill No’s 745 & 833 (both 1667) give Cubusches as an old name for Culbo.

Kinbeachie

RSS VI (47.3) 1567, RMS V (719) 1584 (original 1568) & RMS VI (265) 1595 all give Kinbeachie as a ½ davach. See also OPS II, II pp 844-5 for 1576 quoting Flowerburn Charters.

Drumcudden

Dromcudyn is mentioned in 1328 (Robertson’s Index p 28 No 11(2)). The return stipulated in RMS V (1331) 1587 is that of a davach. A davach in Retours (Ross) (157) 1693.

Brae

Davach in 1349/50 (W Fraser, Earls of Cromartie II p 448, GD159/32). Confirmed in 1370 (RRS VI (476), RMS I (370) 1370 & App 2 No 1663). (See also GD159/32 1437-8, RSS VII (945) 1576-7). (Sometimes described as in ‘bog’ or ‘marsh’ of ‘Fornewyr’. I think this is more likely to be the ‘mairdom’ of Fornewyr – i.e. read maragium rather than maresium). Documents suggest later divided into 2 sections: 1 x 3 oxgangs, 1 x 5 oxgangs. Different to Brae in Fodderty.

Craig

In the Books of Asssumption The Craighouse pays the same as The Wodheid (probably a ¼ davach).  RMS VI (353) 1595, on original of 1561, gives the annual Reddendo of Craig as 4m and ¼ mart. It is likely it was a ¼ davach then. RS38/3/169r 1667 links it with Toperchurne/Toberchurne.

Balblair

Easter Balblair is referred to as ‘alias Kirkmichaell’ in 1556 & 1564. (RMS IV (1225) 1557 on original of 1556; VI (354) 1595 on original of 1564). Also RS37/3/333r 1627 & RS38/2/70v 1663.

Wester Balblair was linked with or included Ballaiskaillie (Ballyskelly NH 7064) and Auchmartyne (Auchmartin NH 6966). Balblair and several other farms seem to have become included in the estate of Newhall (NH 6965) by 1685 – see Retours (Ross) (142).

¾ davach is an unlikely total for Balblair so I think there may have been another ¼ davach of kirklands.
