Kentoure seems to have been an estate centre in 1499, 1507, 1509 & 1528-9 when it is given as a 10m land. Presumably this was the name of the davoch. Aros is named with it from 1686. See below. |

Argarey | In almost all documents this lacks a ‘d’ suggesting the first element is Ari- (airigh or sheiling). In AS II (1044) of 1662 it is given as Arrizerrary and in the 1686 rental it is Arrizearne. The earliest record I can find for Airigh nam Beist is 1724 so this is possibly it.

Total Kilcalumkill(?) parish | 9⅞m | Compare with brieve’s holding in 1541.
Total (m) | 85¼m |
Kintour
Kentoure seems to have been split in two by 1722. Aros & Kentur (the seaward section) were 1⅞m while Staoin (the inland section) was ⅝m. This division may be much older. The 1848 map in Smith is misleading in that Kintour was actually bigger than Staoin (Day Book of Daniel Campbell p 64).
Larg/Largie
This (2 davach?) estate would have included 8 quarterlands but I cannot be sure exactly which. Largie then becomes the general name for this district of Islay. (Pont in Macfarlane’s Geographical Collections II p 188 says Dunyvaig Castle lies on the east side of the Largie). The element survives in two place-names. Largiebreck is on record from 1541 and was linked with Kilcallumkill in 1541 and 1614 but also with Airigh nam Beist in 1724. Machaire Leargariabhoige is mentioned in 1408. There is also a unit of 60m in Yla mentioned in 1499 which becomes 60m ‘in Large de Iley’ in ER XV pp 675-6 of 1528-9.
Ardimersay
In Smith’s map (1848) but not in Add 11803A, the farm of Ardimersay is divided and the top half reads Leekkarmokoly or Leekkannokoly. Langlands (1801) gives Lukanoly. Since I can find no valuation for this I have omitted it from the map.
Texa
In 1507 the description runs ‘Insula de Ilantassane nostre Domine tam in Iley quam in eadem insula’ and the rent is 41s 8d or 3⅛m. The farm included 2½m in Islay itself as well as the ⅝m of Texa itself which was dedicated to Our Lady (Virgin Mary). In 1509 it is called Insula Sancte Marie. Texa’s mainland possessions are listed in the 1541 tack and rental (ER XVII p 634). They were (half) Cragabus in Oa (1¼m) and the Two Kilbrides(1¼m).
Kilbride
In 1541 the 2 Kilbredis are given as 1¼m and there is another entry for Kilbride Ovir at 8s 4d – a total of 1⅞m. This is repeated in 1614 & 1627. In 1722 it is back to 1¼m but in 1733, 1741 & 1751 it is 1½m.
Kilnachtan, Baleferssoun & Ballevicar
The names mean: the church of Nachtan, the township of the parson and the township of the vicar, so it may be that they all refer to parts of the same church farm of 1⅞m which was subdivided into three separately-named holdings of ⅝m. However by 1722 their combined values were 41s 8d (3⅛m) or 5/16 so I think by then they had accrued Ialach Torr and Branabols which together made the extra 1¼m.
Glenastle
Ochterach(Upper) =1m, Etrach(Lower) = ¾m in 1541 & 1614. Upper = ⅝m in 1562-4 & 1583-4 -but the total for Glenastle during these years does not tally with other data. Upper = 4 cowlands, Lower = 3 cowlands in 1722. Lower = NR 2845.
