  1. Noni Brown says:

Thank you .. my interest is Trotternish and in particular places where my Macdonald, McLeod & Budge ancestors lived i.e. Monkstadt, Cnockowe, Balgown and Kilvaxter in Kilmuir.

I have been gathering Skye Place names and a recent early list of places in Trotternish had names that did not appear in my list of places nor maps, but I googled Grenigill and found your site which has many of the names I had not heard of.. great find..

    • drixson says:

Noni, Thank You. I too have Budge ancestors and was always intrigued how they ended up in Skye. (They are a Caithness family).
From memory I think the Macleod papers have 18th century correspondence between the Macleods and Budges.
Might be worth looking at NRAS 2950 via National Records of Scotland. Denis

      • Noni Brown says:

Thank you.. I will check the correspondence as you suggest. I can send you all the information I have on our Budges of Skye. Eleanor Budge’s book says William Budge, Armourer and Blacksmith was bought to Skye by Col Macdonald of Lyndale and granted lands at Balgown to be the Blacksmith for the Macdonalds… sometime around late 1700s. William married a local girl Christine Macdonald – with two sons and one daughter including James Budge.

        • drixson says:

Thanks Noni. Our lot never went to Skye but stayed in Caithness! I think there was some connection over grain supplies but the NRAS records should help.
