Lochiel is fortunate in that we have settlement names from two documentary lines. Both the Macleans and the Camerons had titles for the lands and between them they give us a comprehensive overview of the estate.

  1. a) Readings in square brackets are from the OPS version. The document is repeated in Inverness Retours (16) of 1606.
  2. b) Different order to first column. Also in RMS II (2281) & Inverness Retours 21 of 1608.
  3. c) Same order as first column. Also in RMS III (699) of 1528 to Earl of Argyll.
  4. d) Same order as first column.
  5. e) Same order as second column. Also in RSS II (2994) of 1539.
  6. f) With significant omissions

Gleann Suileag runs north from Fassfern.

Muirshearlich, Crieff, Salachan and Lindalie were not part of Lochiel proper, although included in some of these documents.

An Clachach was probably ‘Clerechaik’ and lies in Gleann Dubh Lighe at NM 9380. It was possibly a sheiling of Druim Farmolach in 1675.

‘Faneworwill’ was possibly Shanaval – part of Fassfern in 1772.

‘Culinap’ was probably ‘Cuilcraip’ which was part of 4m Drumsallie in 1761. It may have been part of Kinlocheil which was then included in Drumsallie.

Most charters and similar documents give lists of properties that are in a coherent geographical order. On this basis we could expect Mykannich, Fyelyn and Creglong to be between Banavie and Corpach. It is possible that ‘Fyelyn’ is Feith a’ Mheallain (NN 0083/0183) which was part of Fassfern in 1772 but I think this is unlikely.

Achitolledoun contains the element achadh (field) and possibly dun (fort). It seems to have been between Corriebeg and Kinlocheil.
