In 1223 Bullull was 1 of the 14 ‘davachtis’ whose ‘sequelas’ were assigned to the new burgh of Dumbarton. For full discussion see text file entitled ‘Davachs in Lennox?’.

Bonhill was originally a very small parish – said to be about 44m in 1643. This would be about 1½ carucates or arachors but I do not have assessments for all of Auchincarroch. It probably comprised the old davach of Bullull on the east bank plus the half-davach on the west bank described in Cartularium de Levenax pp 50-52.

It was then enlarged by the addition of Tillichewan, Stuckrogert, Cameron & Auchendennan from Luss, plus Balloch, Milton, Blairquhois (or Westerton), Ballagan & Ledreshbeg from Kilmaronock.

In the table I have arranged the properties by their original parish. It seems 40½m came from Luss and 26m from Kilmaronock. I find 45⅝m in the old parish of Bonhill so the combined total was 112⅛m. The old parish also included other properties such as Auchincarroch and Darleith. (Darleith was probably a secondary addition to Bonhill since it lies over the ridge or watershed). On the west side of the Leven the northern boundary was the march with Tulliechewan while the southern boundary was the Poachy Burn.
