Cumbernauld

Charter Chest of the Earldom of Wigtown (66) 1524 refers to two husband lands and maillings in Cumernauld. A husbandland is a term more often associated with south-east Scotland where it represented two oxgates. This is the only reference I know in Dunbartonshire so I am unsure whether the term reflects local usage or just that of the scribe.

Smithstone

Smithstown in OS 6” 1st Series Dunbartonshire Sheet XXV, 1859. In AS II (1367) 1667 this is described as including Easter, Wester & Middle Airdries.

Croy

AS II (1074) 1663 is for the lands and teinds of Nether Croy, Croyhill, and that part thereof called Porters Mailling, in the barony of East Lenzie … bounded on the east by the lands of Dulattor, on the south by the ford and burn called Auchinbie  Ford, on the west by the lands of Overcroy, Craigend, Ashieheuch and Longhill, and on the north by the River Kelvin and the piece of land called Haugh.

AS II (113) 1621 gives 4m Over-Croy and 2m Craigend & Eschinbench (i.e 6m or £4 in total). AS II (790) 1653 refers to Mains of Overcroy, Craigend, Eschibucht and Cuilhead. AS II (1339) 1667 refers to Overcroy Mains, Aschiebugh, Craigend & Coalhead. So Over Croy was 6m of which 4m was the Mains and the remaining 2m was composed of Eschinbench (or Eschibucht or Ashieheuch or Aschiebugh) and Craigend. The 6 merkland also contained Longhill/Langhill and Cuilhead/Coalhead.

AS I (599) 1674 refers to a piece of land (butta terre) in the Croft of Over Croy. (A ‘butt’ was a common name for a small piece of ground).

AS II (813) 1653 refers to 6s land called Langhill in the Overcroy.

RHP 141814 is a plan of part of Overcroy.

Over Croy is NS 7275/7276 in OS 6” 1st Series Dunbartonshire Sheet XXV, 1859.

Nether Croy is NS 7276 in OS 6” 1st Series Dunbartonshire Sheet XIXA, 1859.

Chapelton

AS II (1302) 1666 refers to the lands of Chappeltoun, Hill, Langlands, and the western half of Cuthbertstoun.

Tannoch

Fraser, Lennox, I, p 28, refers to ‘the two Tavnachis’, along with other lands, belonging to Sir Patrick Graham in 1388. The same lands appear in RMS II (165) 1430 (on original of 1423) which gives ‘duas Thownachis’ (the two Thownachs) as Graham properties. I am not sure these are the same as Tannoch but I know of no other property in Lennox with a more similar name. See also RMS II (166) 1430 (on original of 1423).
