Sub-total | Min 2½ davachs | ||||
Total | Min 4
davachs |
RS37/5/171r 1634 gives 2¾ davachs + 10d in Edderachylis or Durness. There is a little overlap between the davach and pennyland assessments given above but 4 davachs seems a reasonable total.
Ceathramh Garbh
OPS II, II p 701 says Kinlochbervie is a corruption of Kerrugarbh. This does not seem likely. GD84/1/15/13 1704 lists Kenlochbervie and Kerngarvie separately. (RMS VI (2089) 1608 on original of 1606, gives Keandlochtberve). Ordnance Survey Name Books (Sutherland) Vol XVII p 94.
Handa
Sanda in 1386 (Caithness and Sutherland Records Vol I, Part VII, No 132, pp 173-4, London, 1913).
Sanday was 3d in 1539 (RMS III (2048)) & 1540 (Book of Mackay Appendix No 14 pp 391-3). OPS II, II p 712, quoting Sutherland Charters and RSS Vol XXIV ff 97-8, gives a grant of 1551 by Queen Mary to Robert, bishop of Orkney. (See RSS IV (1371) 1551). This includes Sanday 3d. (3d might be half a davach). OPS II, II p 714, quoting Sutherland Charters in 1613, repeats this. 3d Handa ER XXI p 466 1581-2. Also in Records of the Parliaments of Scotland (online), 19/4/1567 – NAS PA2/10, II, ff 22v-23r. 3d Sanday in RMS IV (1635) 1565.
