davachs

The 1509-10 rental implies c. 19 davachs in Loth.

The 1623 rental gives us 18½ davachs in Loth.

West Helmsdale – for East Helmsdale see under Kildonan parish

ER XIII p 265 1509-10 gives 3 crofts + 1 acre of Helmysdell at 51s 4d rent with Yondir Helmysdell at 40s rent. The latter rent might imply a davach and ‘Yondir’ (yonder) might imply East Helmsdale (i.e. beyond the Water of Helmsdale). See also above under Marrel. A document of 4/2/1581 in Sutherland Charters (quoted in OPS II, II pp 730-1) may identify the three crofts of Helmsdale as ‘Sanct Johnnes Croft, Aucheadelie & Langrig’. GD112/58/1/17 1586 refers to a davoch of Helmsdale & Awchaadalie in the parishes of Kildonane & Loth. OPS II, II p 670, quoting Sutherland Charters for 1601, refers to ‘a davach of Helmisdaill with the pendicles of the same called Achaadaleyis’. This is repeated in Retours (Sutherland) (4) 1616. 1 davach Wester Helmisdaill Achadalie in RS37/1/78v 1618. Dep.313/1598. On OS 6″ 1st Series Sutherland Sheet XC 1871 the burn between West Helmsdale and Gartymore is called Auchvadlie Burn. It enters the sea in ND 0114. In J Kirk’s farm-plans of Gartymore and Wester Helmsdale c. 1772 it is Auldadlie or Auld’adlie.

Map at NLS Dep.313/3620/16 East & West Helmsdale and Gartymore, n.d. OPS II, II p 731 for 1471 inquest witnessed by master of the hospital of Saint John of Helmesdaile.

Marrel

In 1558 this belonged to Master Thomas Brady, prebendary of Helmsdale, who then granted it (along with the prebend of Helmsdale) to the Master of Sutherland (OPS II, II p 731). Included was the salmon fishing of the pool called ‘Sant Johne Puile’ and the ‘crwuis’ (cruives) towards Marrel. In return the Master had to maintain the services and duties used and wont in the chapel of St John of Helmsdale. In 1578 (OPS II, II p 731) this grant is repeated but the lands of Helmsdale are referred to as ‘the crofts of Helmisdell’ which is reminiscent of the description in ER XIII p 265 1509-10. (See below under West Helmsdale)

Garty

Robertson’s Index p 120 No 46 and RMS I (601) 1376-7 refer to the 3 davachs of Garthyes which probably match the Easter, Mid and Wester Garty of later times. However Easter Garty seems to have become Meklegarthe by 1509-10 and is now Gartymore. There is also an anomaly in that 3 davachs should be 18d but the three Gartys listed in 1623 come to 27d or 4½ davachs. (The evidence in ER XIII p 265, 1509-10, suggests they may have been more than 3 davachs by then).

See also OPS II, II p 732 for an arrangement concerning Garty in 1401 (quoting Lib. Ins. Miss. pp l-li which refers to two Gartyis). See Farr parish (Sutherland) under Invernaver for further discussion.

Lothmore

Blaeu (Sutherland) shows Lothamoir to east of river, Loth-Beg to west. Estirloth in RMS II (443) 1451.

Lothbeg

The 1623 rental allows a reduction of victual rent because of damage by the Water of Loth. Bangor-Jones p 160 refers to 15d of Lothbeg quoting NLS213/2113. Blaeu (Sutherland) shows Lothamoir to east of river, Loth-Beg to west. Westirloth in RMS II (443) 1451.

Glen Loth

The 1623 rental (GD128/47/8/6) gives no valuation but a rent of £27 cash only. (Lothbeg & Lothmore each paid £32 silver + rents in kind.). Uvyrglen de Loth in RMS II (443) 1451.

Kintradwell

NLS Dep 313/3312 1674 gives ‘half davauch land in Clynetreidwe(ll) and then, further on in the same document, 2d, 3d & 3d in Clynetredwa(ll).

NLS Dep.313/3583 Kintradwell, John Kirk, c.1771 gives Letoch as a place-name at the north-west side of the farm. This is the Gaelic term for a half-davach.

The 1623 rental shows it was composed of two parts; one was 6d or 1 davach, the other was 3d or a half-davach.
